Descriptions of Some of the Jobs Available in the Oil Fields

Below we’ve have listed some of the jobs available in the oil and gas industry so you can see the variety of employment opportunities that exist. There are dozens more in The Oil and Gas Jobs Resource Kit.  Check it out and begin an exciting new career.

 

Assistant Cook or 2nd cook assists the Lead Cook in preparing meals for crews, needs to enjoy cooking and have a desire to move into lead cook’s position .
Driver responsible for the transportation to and from the oil rig camp of supplies and equipment, must be able to drive on unpaved roads in all kinds of weather.
Driver’s Assistant helps load and unload trucks, provides breaks to the truckers while on the road, cleans and maintains the truck . (also called Swampers)
Electrician’s Helper assists the electrician in testing and inspecting electrical equipment, running wires, fixing electrical problems.
Equipment Operator drives and operates trucks and various machines, apprentice level position.
Field Assistant assists geo-technicians and geologists in recording data used in finding new locations of oil deposits, needs good technical aptitude and will learn how to operate geophysical testing equipment.
Geophone Personnel lays down  geophone cables, often involving lots of clearing and digging – a very physically demanding job, must work in all weather, be able to lift over 55lbs (25kg). Paid by the hour and lots of overtime (also called Jughounds)
Janitor keeps the camp clean by cleaning bathrooms, floors, taking garbage out and other housekeeping duties. Light maintenance duties may also be required.
Mechanic’s Helper assists the camp or rig mechanic with oiling and lubricating moving parts of machines, cleaning motorized equipment and fixing mechanical problems
Roughnecks works on deck of drilling rigs, handling sections of pipe, moves rigs, handles spills, helps maintain equipment and drives.
Roustabouts cleans, paints, moves and handles supplies, see fuller description in The Oil and Gas Jobs Resource Kit 
Seismic Driller’s Helper assists the seismic driller, to drill the holes for dynamite used to generate seismic data needed to help find new locations for oil.
Slasher cuts and clears trees along seismic lines, chainsaws and safety gear are among the tools used. Pay is based on  number of meters cleared or hour worked.
Survey Helper assists the surveyor by holding the stakes and rods used in surveying, as well as carrying the equipment used.
